About SPE
History The history of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) began well before its
actual establishment. During the decade after the 1901 discovery of the Spindletop
field, the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) saw a growing need for
a forum in the booming new field of petroleum engineering. As a result, AIME formed
a standing committee on oil and gas in 1913. In 1922, the committee was expanded
to become one of AIME’s 10 professional divisions. The Petroleum Division of AIME
continued to grow throughout the next three decades. By 1950, the Petroleum Division
had become one of three separate branches of AIME, and in 1957 the Petroleum Branch
of AIME was expanded once again to form a professional society.
The first SPE Board of Directors meeting was held 6 October 1957, making 2007
the 50th anniversary year for SPE as a professional society.

SPE Bergen
SPE Bergen is one of four sections in Norway. We host a variety of activities
and events, focusing on network and knowledge, for our some 400 members. Most
petroleum related companies in the Bergen area are represented among our members,
as is the variety of technical positions within this broad and important industry.
The SPE Bergen hosts members meetings on a regular basis, as well as other activities
such as the very popular annual SPE Sailing with the Statsraad Lehmkuhl in late
spring, and the "SPE Lutefisk and other sub-sea completions" in early winter.
Young Professionals
SPE recognizes the importance of those who one day will be leaders of the E&P
industry. Along with many SPE sections, the SPE Bergen Section have developed
a
Young Professionals (YP) program, to support and assist those in the industry with fewer than 10 years’ experience.
Students
SPE is one of the most prestigious technical/professional organizations in the
world and being an SPE Student Member is considered a noteworthy achievement by
industry professionals and executives.
The SPE Bergen Student Chapter counts several hundred members from the University
of Bergen and Bergen University College, and is the most important link between
students and the petroleum industry in the Bergen area.
The SPE Bergen Section is proud to support and sponsor one of the worlds largest
and most vibrant student chapters.
