The visiting students are guests at Bergen University College (HiB). For two weeks they are visiting Bergen and the subsea industry, as well as attending various workshops and lectures in the Bergen area.
The extensive two-week program is also open to some 80 local subsea engineering students. Close relationships are formed as the Norwegian students open their homes to the Brazilian students during the visit.
The close collaboration between the Bergen University College and Universário Vila Velha dates back to 2007, and the first group of Brazilian students visited Bergen the following year. Since then, students have travelled across the ocean every year. Norwegian subsea engineering students from HiB travel to UVV on similar excursions.
Demitrius Theodoro Duval da Silva is one of the petroleum engineer students who arrived at Flesland airport last week. This is his first journey outside Brazil.
– I am very excited about this, and hope to broaden my network. Hopefully, I will get to know new people and new technology and get a better understanding of the market in this part of the world, said Duval da Silva on his first day in Bergen.
Before leaving Brazil he looked up the companies the group is visiting while in Norway, and listed Statoil, FMC Technologies, and Framo Engineering as companies of special interest to himself. Duval da Silva is now in his fourth year of a five year program in petroleum engineering at UVV. All the Norwegian students are studying subsea engineering, and most of them are in their first or second year.
In addition to the students, three Brazilian professors attending the SPE Bergen One Day Seminar are José Maria Rodrigues Nicolau, Alessandro Coutinho Ramos and Rafael Galvêas Olivera. Professor Nicolau has attended all the excursions from Espírito Santo to Bergen and is one of the founders of this successful exchange program.
